Tshwaranang Community Development (TCD) is calling for Tembisa soccer and netball teams to affiliate in their u-11 to u-17 sport tournament.
TCD’s spokesperson Andile Mngoma said they have started the tournaments to reignite sport interest among the teenagers.
“We had our first tournament on September 1 and due to lack of affiliation we did not have many teams participating,” said Mngoma.
He said they saw a gap of such a tournament because young people are no longer interested in sporting codes.
“Teenagers get into wrong things like drug abuse. We, therefore, sat down with SAPS to discuss ways of keeping teenagers from getting into crime and we saw that sport could be a solution. We are worried about the rate at which crime is escalating among young people.
“To remedy the situation is for us to shift young people’s focus by developing their interest in sport,” Mngoma explained.
TCD needs to make sport a fashionable thing for teenagers to participate in.
He said children who are playing on the township’s dusty fields have no next level thereafter.
TCD will ensure that talent scouts are invited to their tournaments to give young people an opportunity to be spotted by teams playing in the professional side.
Potential sponsors and teams that want to affiliate with them can call Mngoma on 078 421 5139.
