Faulty traffic lights on Reverend RTJ Namane Drive cause havoc

This new intersection endangers lives.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is concerned about a dangerous intersection in Hospital View, Tembisa.

The DA’s PR councillor in Ekurhuleni, Selby Thekiso, said the petrol station at the corner of Reverend RTJ Namane Drive and Ruth First Street in Ward 89 had not been operational for a number of years but has suddenly come alive in the last few months.

“The owners of the petrol station have taken advantage of the hype and newly constructed IRPTN infrastructure.

This is a progressive step in advancing the critical aspect of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE). The downside of this positive development, however, is that traffic congestion has increased tremendously in the area, resulting in regular accidents that have led to injured residents and damaged property,” said Thekiso.

He alleged that the traffic lights at the said intersection are horribly inefficient as the traffic lights’ turning signals seldom work correctly.

“Driving in and out of the garage is extremely dangerous because of the congestion and the traffic light issues.

“Upon speaking to the residents, I was informed that a number of them have been reporting the issue of traffic lights at this major intersection, but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

“The local authorities have simply ignored them,” added Thekiso.

He said the DA certainly appreciates the improvements that are taking place within Ekurhuleni townships, such as the IRPTN, as this is an indication of the commitment towards the redressing of past inequities.

“We, however, call on the CoE to ensure that due diligence and care is not forsaken in the process of effecting these improvements.

“The DA in Ekurhuleni will ensure that a meeting is held with the relevant MECs to ensure that the necessary improvements are implemented.”
