Ekurhuleni North Cluster arrests 36 in weekend operations

A total of 36 suspects have landed in police custody in the Ekurhuleni North cells over the weekend of May 12 for allegedly driving motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.

The Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, said the police have been out in full force as they strive to ensure that people, including pedestrians, are and feel safe on the roads.

“Some of the arrestees may have already paid bail but the Ekurhuleni North management believes by arresting these suspects, unnecessary accidents have been avoided. Furthermore, those disrespecting the road laws were not the only ones under police scrutiny. Drugs, which are a huge headache for the police and the community within this cluster, were given the attention they so much deserve,” added Matimulane.

Matimulane said about 35 suspects have been arrested for possession of drugs and dagga, and one such was arrested for dealing in drugs.

“Two suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, three for alleged possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles while another one was found in possession of a hijacked motor vehicle. The suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate”s Court,” said Matimulane.
