Ekurhuleni respond to Mooifontein Cemetery vandalism

Cremation walls vandalised at the Mooifontein Cemetery.

The DA shadow MMC for Human Settlements in Ekurhuleni, councillor Mabekenyane Thamahane, has recently raised concerns about the appalling state of toilets and vandalised cremation walls at the Mooifontein Cemetery.

“I was shocked and embarrassed by the state of the toilets. It is unhygienic and appalling. The toilets have been vandalised and there are no windows or doors. The toilet seats were removed and the toilets have been used for criminal activity as indicated by burnt electrical cables that were found in one of the toilets,” said Thamahane.

When responding to the media inquiry of The Tembisan last week, The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality media officer, Nombuso Nkosi, said security personnel has been introduced at the cemetery to curb vandalism.

“There are plans to fence the crematorium wall. The cemeteries division is aware of the escalating vandalism and crime at the cemetery. Consequently, the cemeteries division is currently working with the SAPS and the EMPD to find a working solution that would considerably reduce crime and vandalism. An additional budget has been requested for security upgrades, repairing of the vandalised niches and the perimeter wall,” added Nkosi.
