Rabie Ridge detective gets his man

Detective Sergeant Jeffrey Mhlongo, who led the investigation.

The Johannesburg High Court in Palm Ridge has sentenced Thulane Nomvethe to 22 years and six months’ imprisonment for a murder he committed on December 15, 2016.

Rabie Ridge SAPS communications officer Captain Mofana Masela said Nomvethe fatally shot a victim four times on a street in Klipfontein View.

“Rabie Ridge Detective Sergeant Jeffrey Mhlongo investigated the case, and on February 21 the accused was convicted for the above offence in the Johannesburg High Court, Palm Ridge.”

In addition to his murder sentence, Nomvethe was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for possession of an unlicenced firearm, six months for unlawful possession of ammunition and 12 months for theft.

Masela explained these sentences will run concurrently with the murder sentence, so Nomvethe will serve an effective 22 years and six months in prison.

“This is an excellent performance by the Rabie Ridge detectives and it is a lesson to criminals,” he said.

Rabie Ridge SAPS station commander Colonel Johana Ngoma praised the detective work headed by Lieutenant Colonel Adrie Craford, saying this would advance the station’s performance to four stars. “The community must continue to work with police to promote this relationship, and in that partnership criminals will be squeezed to the limit,” Ngoma said.
