EMPD arrests Umthambeka man wanted for stabbing spree and murder

This is the suspect arrested for several stabbings in Tembisa, including murder.

The EMPD Community Liaison Unit (CLU) members were made aware of a man, who between December 2017 and February this year, is alleged to have stabbed not less than four victims, one of whom died as a result, on February 9.

EMPD spokesperson, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago said armed with the description of the suspect and his place of abode, the metro police went out in search of him.

“All places he frequents were staked out for the better part of the morning. The CLU members’ patience paid off when the suspect was sighted walking into his home at Umthambeka Section in Tembisa. At around 1pm, the metro police waylaid him when he left his home to visit a nearby spaza shop and apprehended him.

“The suspect is implicated in a murder where a victim was stabbed to death in December,” added Kgasago.

Kgasago said it emerged at the time of his arrest that he was out on bail for a knife attack on a victim in the area.

“Furthermore, on February 3, members of the Umthambeka Section community witnessed him stabbing yet another victim in broad daylight. It is alleged that the knife attack was so vicious with the injuries sustained by the victim so severe that a case of attempted murder was registered against him.

“The suspect, who is in his late twenties, was detained at Tembisa SAPS,” said Kgasago.

He is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court.
