Be vigilant of car selling scams: Moriting man loses R5 000

A case of fraud was opened at the Tembisa SAPS on February 6 after a 50-year-old man from Moriting Section was defrauded of R5 000.

According to the Tembisa SAPS communication officer, Constable Patricia Mgijima, the complainant saw an advert on Gumtree for a Mazda 3 vehicle that was for sale.

“He called the alleged seller who advised him to deposit the said amount into a Capitec Bank account. The suspect further provided the complainant with two cellphone numbers, his wife’s and his son’s, and said the son will deliver the car to him in Benoni as they agreed. When he called the son’s cellphone, it rang without being picked up. He then called the wife who disputed that the amount was too small and that he must add to it. Since then they never answered their phones and the car was never delivered to him,” said Mgijima.

Mgijima said in a separate but similar incident in Rabie Ridge, a 43-year-old man saw an advert on OLX for a Mazda Drifter bakkie.

“He was told to deposit R1 500 for petrol as the car was alleged to be in East London. After depositing the money into a Capitec Bank account, he asked the suspects to meet him at Birch Acres Mall to pay the balance. When they arrived, he asked them to meet him inside the bank but they refused and they never answered their cellphones,” added Mgijima.

Mgijima said this has been happening since last year. In one of the instances, the complainant was asked to deposit R5 000.

“He was again asked to deposit an amount of R500 for petrol as the car was in Standerton. The victim was promised that the car will be delivered by the son. Then the cellphones were off when he phoned. We are still appealing to the members of the community to refrain from depositing their money before even seeing the product and never to meet strangers in shady places,” said Mgijima.
