Police arrest 85 suspects in weekend operation

SAPS released a record of weekend arrests made from December 1 to December 4.

Ekurhuleni North Cluster Communication Officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela said the Cluster arrested about eighty five suspects from Friday afternoon till Sunday morning.

“Fifteen of the suspects were found driving motor vehicles whilst under the influence of liquor; ten were arrested at Rabie Ridge SAPS. Fourteen suspects were also arrested for assault cases, twelve for possession of dagga, drugs and eleven were arrested for shoplifting.

“Other suspects were arrested for cases such as theft, reckless and negligent driving, robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm,” said Captain Sekgobela.

She said among the suspects was a scrapyard owner who was arrested in Ivory Park Extension 7 on Friday for possession of two stolen motor vehicles.

“Police received a complaint from Netstar tracking company regarding a VW Polo Vivo which was hijacked in Tembisa. SAPS members visited the address. On arrival they found the vehicle parked in the scrapyard and the owner of the scrapyard informed them that it belonged to his friend but failed to provide the details of the friend.

“While checking around the yard, they noticed a maroon Mercedes Benz which had also been reported as stolen by Springs SAPS last month. The owner of the scrap yard was arrested for those two stolen motor vehicles and taken to Ivory Park Saps cells.”

All the suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa, Kempton Park and Edenvale Magistrate’s Courts to face their charges.
