Tembisa EMPD officer nabbed with illegal gun

AN Ekurhuleni metro police officer (45) from Birch Acres was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at his home on Friday.

Police found a shotgun with its serial number filed off when they visited the officer, who is based in Tembisa, to deliver a protection order from the court.

Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, said the station commander, Col Tobie Strauss and D/Sgt Habeeb went to the house around 2pm to serve him

with the protection order.

“When they arrived at his house he was no at home. They called him to come home and the officer immediately returned. They read the contents of the protection order to him.”

As the protection order instructed that he would not be allowed to have any firearms in his possession, he handed over his service pistol to the officers. The officers requested to search his house to make sure he did not have any other firearms in his possession.

Molokomme said he granted permission for his house and car to be searched.

He granted them permission to search his house and car. Inside the house they found a shotgun with its number filled off, as well as different types of rounds of ammunition, including rounds for a R5, shotgun, 5.56 and 83 live rounds for a revolver. They also found two toy guns, Molokomme added.

Inside his car they found a plastic bag with South African identity documents for different people, passports for different countries and driver’s licences from different countries. The driver’s licences are suspected to be fake.

They also found seven metro police pocket books and two South African police service pocket books.

Molokomme said investigations were continueing to determine if he could be linked to crimes such as robbery and fraud.
