Weekend-long celebrations as Tembisa turns 60

Tembisa, the second largest township in Gauteng, is celebrating 60 years of existence.

The celebration of this multi-cultural township will culminate in a series of events which will be used to tell the area’s history and icons.

Activities kick off with the hosting of a gala dinner tonight at Moses Molelekwa Community Centre. The dinner will also see the launch of Tembisa Development Agency (TDA).

The TDA will be responsible for accelerating business development and attracting investors in the area.

Following hot on its heels is the Tembisa Business Indaba on Friday, where the Finance and Economic Development Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC), Clr Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, will unveil the Tembisa Integrated Development and Master Plan.

The MMC will focus on the developmental goals of Tembisa over the next 10 to 15 years.

The community of Tembisa will also use the 60th anniversary to commemorate the life of fallen local heroes at the Peoples’ Festival on Saturday in Moriting Park from 11am to late.

The festival boasts local artists and displays the township’s vibrant cultural diversity through the cuisine, cooked and sold at the Easy Saturday’s Food Market.

The celebrations will come to an end on Sunday with the hosting of a live jazz session and the gospel festival.
