Ivory Park man arrested for allegedly raping his adopted sister (15)

A 20-year-old man from Ivory Park has been arrested for allegedly raping his adopted sister (15) over a period of three to four years.

According to Ivory Park SAPS communications officer Capt Bernard Matimulane, the man handed himself over to the police.

“The officer on duty instructed that the victim and the parent be collected from home, just to understand what the family knew about the ongoing rape of the 15-year-old by her adopted brother.

“It then emerged during the meeting with the mother, the victim and the suspect that the family became aware of the rape of the minor sometime in November and that the child had been sexually abused, allegedly by the suspect, since she was 12 years old.

“But instead of opening a case, the family chose to discuss the matter internally rather than involve the police,” said Matimulane.

The station commander of Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, said any tendency by a family to discuss all forms of sexual violations instead of reporting these to the police should be condemned and strongly discouraged.

“Allegations that the suspect attempted to come after the victim even after the so-called family intervention clearly illustrates that such domestic interventions which exclude the law enforcement authorities do not work. We all have an obligation to protect the victims in matters such as these,” said Ngcobo.

The suspect has appeared in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court.

The case is being investigated by detectives from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
