Woman in Merc caught doing 197km/h

A 40-year-old woman was arrested on September 23 after allegedly clocking 197km/h in her Mercedes Benz on the R21.

She was one of 19 motorists arrested for speeding over the long weekend.

Kobeli Mokheseng, metro police spokesperson, said various speed control operations were conducted over the long weekend.

On September 23, between 5am and 11am, five motorists were detained on Great North Road in Benoni for exceeding the 70km/h speed limit. The offenders were doing between 107 and 115km/h.

The Mercedes Benz driver was nabbed at 5.30am during a speed operation on the R21 at the Olifantsfontein on and off-ramps. Nine other motorists were also caught doing speeds between 165 and 196km/h.

On September 25, between 5am and 10am, the metro police moved to Atlas Road near Denel where two motorists were detained after driving 121km/h in the 80km/h zone.

On the same day, between 7am and 1pm, two more drivers were caught on the R21 at the Pomona Road off-ramp. Both lawbreakers, who had no reason for speeding, clocked between 167 and 173km/h.
