Man arrested for robbery and possession of firearm

Ivory Park SAPS arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with a business robbery that occurred in Duduza, next to Tswelopele.

An unspecified amount of cash, airtime vouchers and cigarettes were taken at gunpoint.

It was alleged that on August 28, at about 10am, two Ethiopian nationals were in their shops when two men arrived.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Capt Bernard Matimulane, one of the suspects was armed and he instructed the victims to lie down while he and his accomplice ransacked the place.

“It so happened that some residents of this crime ridden area saw what was happening after one of the victims screamed. The two men panicked and fled the scene, with the community in hot pursuit.

“The man with the firearm was caught and the firearm, with three rounds of live ammunition, was recovered. The suspect was beaten to a pulp and his life was saved by the timely arrival of the police who got wind of the robbery,” explains Matimulane.

Matimulane said the suspect is under police guard in hospital and is facing a charge of business robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and live rounds of ammunition.

The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS thanked the community for coming out in full force and for reclaiming their space from criminals.

He, however, cautioned people against the dangers of taking the law into one’s hands, as they as the initial victims may end up being arrested.
