‘Berserk’ man using his car as weapon now faces murder charge

Ivory Park SAPS detectives tasked with investigating a murder incident on Monday July 31 arrested a 34-year-old man for the murder, which was allegedly committed during the month of June.

The Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, said the suspect was allegedly involved in a tussle with the deceased in June after he was alleged to have run over the deceased’s foot with his car.

“Apparently the suspect was not aware of what had happened but a fight broke out when the deceased approached him to let him know what had happened. Instead of showing sympathy with the deceased the suspect allegedly went berserk and began to fight the deceased and his two friends.

During the madness that ensued afterwards the suspect is alleged to have used his car as a weapon with which to chase the victim and his friends, running over the victim and his second friend, before hitting a wall and damaging his vehicle. In the process the deceased was also pelted with stones and beer bottles,” explained Capt Matimulane.

Capt Matimulane said when the police responded to the complaint, the suspect falsely told the police that the deceased and his friends had tried to hijack him, and a case to that effect was opened.

“Subsequent investigations revealed that there was never an attempted hijacking in the first place and the search for the suspect commenced, culminating in his arrest on July 31,” said Capt Matimulane.

He said the victim died of his injuries three days after he was admitted to Tembisa Hospital.

The suspect is now facing a murder charge and was expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court.
