Two theft suspects beaten to death

Ivory Park SAPS is investigating a case of double murder after two suspected thieves were beaten to death by a mob at the construction site of a shopping mall in Kaalfontein.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the two deceased – aged 27 and 29 – were part of an 11-man squad that was allegedly found stealing scaffolding at the construction site in the early hours of Sunday.

“The Ivory Park SAPS members were called to the scene and found the 11 suspects who had been badly beaten. The scaffold was already loaded on a vehicle allegedly belonging to one of the deceased men,” said Matimulane.

The Station Commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, was shocked by the gruesome murders and beatings of the suspects.

He reiterated his call for the community to continue assisting the police within the confines of the law.

“The suspects were caught in possession of stolen property and there was no need for any person to take the law into their own hands, except to hand the suspects over to the police,” said Ngcobo.

One of the suspects died at the police station while a second suspect succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Five of the remaining suspects are in hospital and four are in custody.
