Renting in Tembisa

This is often not because there is no accommodation, but because tracing it might be challenging.

Someone once said that Tembisa must be one of the most difficult places to find suitable accommodation.

It is if you do not understand the ins and outs of this magnificent East Rand township. Study the area before you start looking for a place anywhere in South Africa, especially in townships.

The mistake most would-be tenants make is to look for accommodation in Tembisa solely online. There aren’t as many rooms or houses in Tembisa listed online; you will end up settling for something you aren’t entirely sure of. Even with many free, online classifieds, Tembisans have not really fully embraced these online classifieds. Tembisans are not entirely convinced as to whether these platforms are effective or not. Also, another thing is that landlords rely heavily on word of mouth and walk-ins. This has always been a good way of finding tenants (tried and tested).

Advertising rooms available online is still new in Tembisa. Most property owners in Tembisa are senior citizens and often lack an in-depth understanding of online advertising. Even those with children who understand it, the online admin seems pretty daunting. No everyone has the time or resources required.

Fact Sheet

  •  Rooms go for R500 and above, while houses start at R2 500.
  •  There are approximately 25 sections to choose from in Tembisa. If you work in Jozi, consider Sangweni and sections close by due to transport and traffic. Taxis are accessible there.
  •  Lifestyle. If you like hosting parties, a place like Hospital View may not be able to accommodate your house parties. I could be wrong, but landlords do not like tenants who constantly host parties there.
  •  Parking, if you have a car. Not all yards have parking and if they do, not all are safe.
  • There are also cheaper options, but the living conditions are not as conducive.

Areas such as Winnie Mandela Park and Ivory Park have shacks available to rent. Be honest with yourself and your pocket, never settle for something you do not like or you can’t afford.
