Rapists go to jail for life

On June 6 the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court sent two criminals to jail to spend the rest of their lives behind bars for rape crimes.

Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said the two men were arrested at Winnie Mandela park during the month of June, 2013.

“Prior to the arrest, the men confronted a woman (38) during the early hours one morning while she was on her way to work at Madiba Drive. The woman alleged that the three men, one of them in possession of a firearm, pointed the gun at her. The person who was in possession of the firearm grabbed her handbag and ran away. In the bag were house keys, money and a monthly train ticket,” said Ralidzhivha.

The woman alleged that she was left with the two men who were armed with a knife and a screwdriver.

The one with the knife threatened her, overpowered and then raped her.

“A few minutes later the suspects accosted a 55-year-old woman, also on Madiba Drive. She too was on her way to work. She was also raped and then dragged her to a nearby house. The woman the heard a noise and cried for help.

“The voices said they were the police. The police pushed the door open and rescued her.

The two men who were with her in the room were arrested,” said Ralidzhivha.

He said Siphesihle Phakhathi and Nkosinathi Ntshangase appeared before the magistrate at the Tembisa Court and

were found guilty and sentenced as follows:

Two counts of rape, life imprisonment on each count.
Two counts of robbery – 15 years imprisonment on each count.
Kidnapping – two years.

The robbery and kidnapping sentences are to run concurrently with the life sentence.
