Two arrested for possession of hijacked cars

Members of the Tembisa Tactical Response Team (TRT) arrested two men in Ivory Park, Extension 2 for possession of hijacked motor vehicles on Sunday.

The arrests happened separately.

In the first incident the TRT arrested a 36-year-old man from Kwagga, Mpumalanga after chasing him in the area.

During the chase the suspect hit a stone, exited the car and fled the scene on foot, but the police were in hot pursuit.

He was caught shortly afterwards.

The luxury sedan he was caught in possession of was hijacked in Mpumalanga on Saturday by three armed men.

It was not immediately clear if the suspect was one of the three who robbed the owner of his vehicle.

The second suspect, 26, was caught as he was about to wash the vehicle, a Mazda sedan.

He claims the vehicle had been brought to him by his friend for washing.

The alleged friend has not been seen since the arrest.

Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, the station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, was pleased with these arrests.

“Ivory Park will not be a destination of choice for stolen vehicles. My police officers, together with colleagues from specialised units such as the TRT, are committed to ensuring that those who bring stolen and hijacked vehicles here will be caught,” added Ngcobo.

He further called on the community to report any suspicious-looking vehicles in their areas.

The two are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.
